  3. Before 1763 • American colonists were left alone to govern themselves

  4. The Stamp Act • Colonists were upset because they felt that parliament had no right to tax them.

  5. Townshend Act and the Tea Act • The Townshend Act and the Tea Act were an act of “ taxation without representation” • The tea act - lowered price of tea, however colonists were still taxed without representation • The townshend acts - tax on all goods imported from Britain

  6. Patrick Henry • I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!” • one of the most influential (and radical) advocates of the American Revolution

  7. George Washington • Chosen by the Second Continental Congress to command the new Continental Army

  8. Declaration of Independence • Listed the reasons why it was time for the colonists to separate from Britain. • Celebrated today as Independence Day • First draft of the document was written by Thomas Jefferson

  9. Olive Branch Petition • Was written to persuade King George to make peace with the colonists • Common Sense: • Main impact-its telling the colonists that they NEED their freedom.
