  2. History • Illinois School Library Media Association wanted an award between Monarch (younger audience) and Caudill (older audience). • Right fit for 3-5 graders • Approved in October 2008. • Named after Illinois State Prairie grass • Award is given to book, not the author or illustrator.

  3. Criteria • May include timeless classics as well as current titles. • Can include books on the Monarch and Caudill lists.

  4. Award • The library school specialist conducts voting in schools. • Any Illinois student in grades 3-5 must have read at least 4 of the 20 nominated books. • Vote total s must be submitted by first Monday in April. • Winner announced during National Library Week in April.
