  5. TP-CASTT Title: Ponder what the title before reading the poem. What does it mean? Paraphrase: Translate the poem into your own words. Connotation: Contemplate the poem for meaning beyond the literal. What words stand out to you? Attitude: What is the tone? Shifts: Does the speakers attitude change? Title: Examine the title again; make an interpretation. Theme: Determine what the poet is saying. What general observation are they making about life?

  6. Terms to Know Paraphrase: restating or rewording. What is going on in the poem? Put it in your own words. Connotation: implications or emotional quality of words. Look for figurative language such as, similie, metaphore, alliteration. How do these elements contribute to the meaning of the poem?
