Daily physical activity, avoiding harmful behaviors Mental/Emotional Health – how you handle your thoughts, feelings and emotions Ex. Sharing your thoughts and feelings, positive self-esteem Social Health –how you relate to people at home, school and everywhere else Ex. Strong friendships and family relationships
Wellness – state of well-being or balanced health over a long period of time.Your health changes from day to day.Illness-Wellness Continuum – Is a scale that gives a picture of your health at a certain time
The Mind-Body Connection – how your emotions affect your physical and overall health and how your overall health affects your emotions- your mind and body connect through your nervous system- the nerves link your brain to your body

Lifestyle Factors – the behaviors and habits that help determine a person’s level of health - Positive factors – promote good health - Negative factors – promote poor health Your attitude, or your feelings and beliefs, toward your personal lifestyle factors play an important role in your health.
Risk – the chance that something harmful may happen to your health and wellness. • Some are easy to identify, others are hard • Risks you can avoid often involve risk behavior
Risk Behavior – an action or behavior that might cause injury or harm to you or others All risk behaviors have consequences. Some are short term and some are long term. Cumulative Risks – when one risk factor adds to another to increase the danger. Ex. Unhealthy food choices and lack of exercise
Prevention – taking steps to avoid something (injury, illness, death, disease, other negative outcome) Ex. Wearing helmet, seatbelt Be responsible for your health by staying informed Ex. Physical exams Practice Abstinence – the conscious, active choice NOT to participate in high risk behaviors
