Prenatal DNA Sequencing Ann Marie Heymann ITMG 100 07
Background Information • DNA sequencing finds out the exact order and combinations of DNA • Human Genome Project – all genes in the human genome are mapped (OzzyOsbourne, Larry King) • Started mapping fetus DNA to provide families with knowledge of mutations like down-syndrome • New technology allows doctors to fix the mutations
Illumina, Inc. • Illumina, Inc., the biggest developer of DNA sequencing machines, bought a small start up company that developed the new technology • Illumina sees this technology as the way of the future because of its benefits • They bought the company even though they had no revenues. • Illumina, Inc.'s website
Pros • Prepares parents for the future • It is possible to prevent mutations if they are scientifically known, like down-syndrome • Test failure rate is less than 1% • Noninvasive procedure
Cons • Can cause stress on how to handle the situation if the fetus does have a genetic disorder • More abortions could result if mutations can’t be fixed • Cost • Ethical issues – abortion, making decisions for another human that they may not want • Ethical Questions Article
The Future • Only the beginning of prenatal DNA sequencing • When the technology is perfected and the cost is low enough, more people will definitely use it • Abortions could increase or decrease • With the introduction of fixing genetic mutations, some people are going to want to “fix” physical traits which creates another ethical debate
