Choosing Alternatives • Many consumers turn to alternative sweeteners to help them limit kcalories and minimize sugar intake. • Doing so will, you will encounter: • Artificial Sweeteners • Herbal Products • Sugar Alcohols
Alternative Sweeteners • Also called non-nutritive sweeteners • Provide virtually no energy • Sugar substitutes • Large doses of these (or their components or metabolic by-products) may have adverse effects.
Herbal Products • Derived from a plants leaves (such as stevia) • Sometimes sold as dietary supplements
Sugar Alcohols • Polyols, provide bulk and sweetness in cookies, hard candies, sugarless gums, jams, and jellies. • Claim to be sugar free; but doesn’t mean kcalorie free. • Referred to as nutritive sweeteners since they yield energy • Occur naturally in fruits and vegetables • Also used in many processed foods
Sugar Alcohols Cont’d • Evoke a low glycemic response • Enter the bloodstream slower than other sugars • Side effects include intestinal gas,, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea • Do not contribute to dental caries (cavities)
Alternative Sweeteners • Advised to use in moderation • Can be good alternatives for people with diabetes, in moderation • Inhibits caries-causing bacteria
