  1. The Junk in your Computer and What It Does By: Jamaal B. Wesley EDIT 565 Graduate Student Lesson for students

  2. General information about computers

  3. The Inside of a Computer For info on components click the arrow.

  4. What do the internal computer components do? • Power supply (see pg. 9) • Expansion Cards: • (See pg. 12) • Video Card • Sound Card • Modem • Motherboard (see pg. 6) • Ribbon Cable (see pg. 13) Click button (right-side) after using the buttons above.

  5. What do the internal computer components do continued…? • CD-ROM • Hard Disk Drive (see pg. 7) • Floppy Disk Drive • RAM (see pg. 14) • CPU (see pg. 8) • BIOS (see pg. 11) Click button (right-side) after using the buttons above.

  6. Motherboard“The Mother” • The motherboard gets its name because it takes care of the other circuit boards. • The motherboard is the largest circuit board and has many smaller boards plugged into it. • It holds all of the most important parts of the computer. • Two of the parts that the motherboard holds are the video card and sound card. This button jumps back to pg. 4

  7. Hard drive“The Closet” • Information that you save on your computer is stored on hard disks or your hard drive. • Think of your computer's hard drive as a closet. The place where all the data and information is stored. • The hard drive is hidden inside the computer because the disks are not meant to be removed. This button jumps back to pg. 5

  8. CPUCentral Processing Unit“The Brain” • The brain of a computer is the CPU or Central Processing Unit. • Like a brain, the CPU controls information and tells other parts what to do. • CPU’s are not all the same. What type of CPU that is in a computer determines how fast the computer can work. • A CPU generates lots of heat, so there is usually a small fan nearby to cool it down. This button jumps back to pg. 5

  9. Power Supply“The Food” • A computer’s power supply takes electricity from your house and converts it into a current that works for your computer. • The electrical cord that comes out of your computer, comes out of the power supply. • When we eat food, our body turns it into energy that allows us to move and play. • The powers supply takes the electricity from the electrical cord and turns it into energy (converted electricity) that the computer can use and allows it to travel to other components inside the computer. This button jumps back to pg. 4

  10. Optical Drives

  11. BIOSBasic Input/Output System“The alarm clock” • A very important computer component is the BIOS chip. • BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System. • When you turn on the computer, the BIOS chip wakes it up and reminds it what parts it has and what they do. This button jumps back to pg. 5

  12. Graphics Card/Video Card “The Eyes and Ears” • Two of the parts that the motherboard holds are the video card and sound card. • These are called expansion cards. • The video card controls the graphics that are displayed on the monitor. • The sound card contains special circuits for operating the computer's sound. This button jumps back to pg. 4

  13. Ribbon Cable • A thin cable that looks like a strip of duct tape, with wires placed side by side. These cables are the type used inside a computer to attach built-in drives and other components to the motherboard. This button jumps back to pg. 4

  14. RAM (Random Access Memory) Chip • The notches in the sides of the module fit the brackets or “handles” which hold the module in place in the motherboard socket: This button jumps back to pg. 5

  15. Connectors 4. 2. 3. 1. 5. 11. 8. 6. 7. 9. 10.

  16. What types of functions do these components do? Components Key: 1) PS/2 Mouse 11) PS/2 Keyboard 2) Parallel Ports 10) SPDIF (Sony Phillips Digital Interface Format) In 11) SPDIF (Sony Phillips Digital Interface Format) Out

  17. What types of functions do these components do? Components Key: 8) Serial Port 3) LAN Ports 7) USB Ports 4) Audio 5) Speaker 6) Microphone
