  2. Context for Changes • Changes made to make Connexion searching similar to FirstSearch searching. • True Boolean keyword searching is available, including multiple terms with a single index label. • Great specificity in phrase and keyword searching is possible.

  3. More Context • Changes in phrase and keyword searching will require attention to master predictable results. • Technical Bulletin #251 is most informative.

  4. Three types of Searches • Command Line Searches – Entered in the box at the top of the screen • Guided Searches – Entered in Keyword / Numeric Search boxes • Browse query (index scan) Searches – Entered into Browse WorldCat Search Screen (separate screen)

  5. Command Line Searches • Derived • Numeric • Keyword / Phrase • Browse Query (index scan)

What’s different? • “Find” is now implicit • Index labels changes – but labels are optional if first search element in command line box. • Phrase searching has been expanded. • New boolean operators – wildcards, truncation & plurals • Use quotation marks around multiple words to search them as a phrase.

  7. Derived Searches • Still structured the same • Title 3,2,2,1 • Name / Title 4,4 • Name 4,3,1 • Corporate name =4,3,1

  8. Index Label Changes • In the command line always use the index labels [e.g., ti] EXCEPT for ISBN number and when doing a derived search. • For numeric searches the index labels and all letters are required for the search.

  10. Phrase Searching Expansion • Many index labels have been changed • Many new indexes have been added • Scan command still browses WorldCat indexes: sca ti:

  11. Punctuation after the index label is now obligatory and meaningful Keyword Search xx: Single word in any location in a field Phrase Search xx= Multiple words in a specific order in a single subfield Whole Phrase Search xxw=Multiple words in a specific order in a single field

Now for something completely different • What is it doing? • Do a derived title search (3,2,2,1) for The Nation’s flu shot shortage – you get 4 results • Now go to that blank command box and simply type: nations flu shot shortage or • Type nations shot flu shortage • I THINK it is assuming “find” – and performing a keyword search.

  16. Boolean Operators • And used between terms, both words must be in the record. nepal india [AND is assumed] • Or used between terms, contain either one or both words in the same record nepal OR india

  17. More Boolean Operators • With “w” between two terms, record must contain both in the order typed “w#” between two terms found in the order typed with no more than 1-25 spaces between the words aluminum w wiring aluminum w2 wiring

  19. Wildcards, truncation and plurals • # - Unknown single character wom#n retrieves women and woman • ? – Unknown number of additional characters col?r retrieves color and colour • * - Truncation – find variant endings librar* retrieves libraries, librarian, etc.

  20. Qualifiers • In the command line qualifiers are the same for keyword searches as they are for the derived searches, but the index terms must be used for keyword searches. mt: Material type yr: Year or years mf: Microform dl: Cataloging source dt: internet/not internet la: Language

What’s different • The dialogue box has been changed considerably. • There are only three lines, but multiple words can be used in each line. • Choose the indexes to be searched, in that box type all the terms to be searched for that index. • In the index boxes at the right are a list of ten commonly used indexes.
