CAREER DEVELOPMENT • Strong international and national developments in support of career development, aiming to support individuals manage the complexity of life, learning and work in the 21st Century. • Australian Blueprint for Career Development. • Priority six of the document entitled “Creating the Future – VET priorities for 2003 – 2004” is to “… provide better career guidance and preparation for employment”. • These initiatives have led to the Department developing a stronger focus on career development programs and initiatives.

  2. CAREER DEVELOPMENT • Some components of the career development agenda: • Career development awareness raising. • The TAFEWA Plus initiative includes employment and career development services for students and graduates. • Career Development Policy Development. • Employment Directions Network

Training and Careers Information Centre • One key aim of the Department: “World Standard Career Development Services”. • Training and Career Information Centre is co-located with two other agencies (ie. The Perth Central Employment Directions Centre and the Commonwealth’s Career Information Centre. • This arrangement is unique nationally.

Training and Careers Information Centre • Aims and priorities of the Centre: • Supporting Western Australians to make informed and directed study choices, leading to increased retention rates in VET and more effective learning and employment outcomes as well as a more efficient labour market. • People of all ages to develop their ‘Career Competencies’ and capabilities (eg. personal management, learning and work exploration and career building skills).

Training and Careers Information Centre • Services provided through the Training and Careers Information Centre: • Vocational education and training information, including information on apprenticeships and traineeships. • Career guidance and programs to development employability skills. • Videos on specific occupations, industries and courses throughout Australia.

Training and Careers Information Centre • Future plans of the Centre: • Foster stronger networks and relationships with schools • Develop strategies to reach more employed people (upskilling and reskilling) • Build stronger links with migrants and equity groups • Stronger support of the Statewide Employment Directions Network

  9. Training and Careers Information Centre • The Centre attracts: • Approximately 60,000 enquiries per year • That is, around 50,000 telephone, 6,000 walk-in and 3,000 email enquiries from the general public. • The nature of the enquiries – Open Session
