Lecture 1 Introduction
1-1 DATA COMMUNICATIONS The term telecommunication means communication at a distance. The word data refers to information presented in whatever form is agreed upon by the parties creating and using the data. Data communications are the exchange of data between two devices via some form of transmission medium such as a wire cable. Topics discussed in this section: Components Data RepresentationData Flow
1-2 NETWORKS A network is a set of devices (often referred to as nodes) connected by communication links. A node can be a computer, printer, or any other device capable of sending and/or receiving data generated by other nodes on the network. Categories of Network Generally there are three categories of network • Local Area network (LAN) • Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) • Wide Area Network (WAN) Category into which a network falls is determined by its size
Categories of Network(2) • Local Area Network (LAN) • A local area network (LAN) is usually privately owned and links the devices in a single office, building, or campus • Wide Area Network (WAN) • A wide area network (WAN) provides long-distance transmission of data over large geographic area that may comprise a country, continent or world wide. • Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) • A metropolitan area network MAN )is a network with a size between a LAN and a WAN. Usually it is spreaded over a city or a part of a city
