Objectives • 1. Discuss what older people want to know about emergencies • 2. Identify solutions for helping older persons to address their questions about emergencies • 3. Identify resources for disaster preparedness and response for aging and Long Term Care
Characteristics of Older Persons At Risk • Increasing numbers • Dependent • Multiple Medications • Decreased Immune Function • Functional limitations • Chronic Illness • Pneumonia • Presentation of illness • Slower Response • Long Term Care
In Need of First Responders • KY Hospitals: 7,544 daily occupied beds • Nursing Facilities: 26,714 daily occupied beds 69% have memory disorder • Home Health: 41,626 daily bed census • Hospice 2,876 daily census • Memory Disorders: 80,000 • Community Elders: 13.3% of population
