Medical Middleware MedMid Working Group Steve Olshansky, Internet2 28 October 2002
MedMid Charter • Exists to further the development of middleware for healthcare education and practice, and related areas. • The working group was formed by the Internet2 Health Sciences Initiative and Internet2 Middleware Initiative, and in cooperation with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
MedMid Context This group will leverage and extend the work currently under way in enabling enterprise directories to support authentication and authorization services in the R&E community, with an eye toward the particular environment and requirements unique to the medical clinical and education sectors.
MedMid Context • Important new content-sharing tools, such as the Shibboleth project within Internet2, will allow unparalleled secure access to medical resources but will require a widely adopted and interoperable directory-enabled infrastructure. • Currently focused on 3 primary scenarios and related requirements:
MedMid Scenario [1] • Access To Resources Including Protected Health Information By Visiting Health Care Providers • A visiting physician (or other provider such as a nurse, laboratory technician) is given access to patient records at a health care facility.
MedMid Scenario [2] • Role-Based Sharing Of Directory Information Between A University Medical School And Its Independent Hospital • A person is given appropriate access to online hospital directory information based on their role (affiliation) with the Medical School.
MedMid Scenario [3] • Sharing Of Electronic Curricular Materials Between Medical Schools • A faculty member at one medical school wants to give students and faculty at another medical school access to electronic curricular materials that he/she has developed.
