What is a Curriculum Vitae? • Often referred to as a CV or Vita • Similar to a resume only longer (2 or more pages) • Provides a more extensive overview of professional achievements • Marketing tool. Goal -- to get you an interview! • Weak CV will get you “a” job • Strong CV will more likely get you “the” job you want • Dynamic; filled with action verbs & accomplishments – makes your document come alive

Objective • Directs CV writing process - Tool for stating “theme” or “goal” to shape your writing: • What do I want? (specify PGY-2 position) • What can I offer that’s relevant? Skills, Experience • What are my special interests? Specific aspect of the field • Can use for seeking niche jobs or PGY-2 • Must convince the reader to want you! • Employers use to determine your “fit” • Phrases to avoid: • “A challenging position” Says “Don’t bore me” • “…with opportunity for growth/advancement..” Says “Promote me”

Clinical Experience Example Pediatrics, September 2011 Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, Cleveland, OH Division of Pediatric Pharmacology and Critical Care Preceptor: Betsy Murray, R.Ph., Pharm.D. 244-bed pediatric hospital and leading academic medical center/teaching hospital offering cutting-edge therapies to children, who often have complex medical and surgical problems, long before they’re available nationwide. • Duties: • Attended and participated in daily rounds with pediatric intensive care unit service • Provided consultation services to pediatric intensive care unit service regarding antiarrhythmic drug therapy with supervision of preceptor • Prepared and presented four patient-based case presentations to preceptor and peers • Accomplishments: • Impact more likely to be at the professional experience /administrative level.

Coach! Provide resume/CV to all recommenders • Send a Thank You note to your recommender when your recommendation is complete
General Guidelines • Two Rules: • Prioritize your content for the reader • Arrange sections from the most important to the least important • Consistency • Focus first on content; then determine format • Arrange information within sections in reverse chronological order • Use standard Word.doc format, not templates
General Guidelines (cont) • Content (cont): • Avoid more than 7 lines of continuous text - it won’t be read; change format to bulleted statements instead • Avoid sentence format – it creates too much text for the reader to absorb; to help you: • Omit the articles “a, an, the” if possible; they are just filler words • Change prepositional phrases (filled prescriptions for compounds) to adjective descriptors (filled compounded prescriptions) - makes language more concise • Omit personal information unless it directly supports your objective; ex. religious and/or political affiliation • Unacceptable: “Nursery school volunteer - United Methodist Church” • Acceptable: “Church nursery school volunteer”
General Guidelines (cont) • Format • Eye-catching page 1 (resume style page) is most impactful for getting initial interview • Standard margins: Top/Bottom = 1” and Right/Left = 1.25” • Standard font size: 10-12 points font on all subsequent pages • Readable font style; do NOT use Courier • Do NOT space information into place! Learn to set and use tabs. Information not set with a tab will “walk” when opened using different computers/printers • Use bullets to break up paragraphs of text – easier to read • Add month/year on bottom line, last page only • Date your document was last updated • Reference for you to track which version of your CV you are reading • Make small (4-8 points font)
General Guidelines (cont) • General Information – document should be: • Concise/ well organized - should see strong points at a glance • Include the technical vocabulary of your profession, better known as “keywords” • Dynamic - use action verbs - (present or past tense) versus adverbs (words ending in –ing) • Quantifiable • Highlight achievements, attributes, skills, abilities, and experiences to your best advantage
General Guidelines (cont) • Saving Your CV • For the Internet (for recruiters /hiring managers to find you) • Save your document using the words “Resume or CV or Vita or Vitae or Curriculum Vita or Curriculum Vitae” in the file path name • Makes it easy for your document to be returned in a detailed search • CAUTION! Using just the word “Resume” for example, also makes it easy for you or others to accidently over-write your document! An easy remedy is to add your initials and/or the date to the file path name • Working CV vs. Final CV • Record all activities/events/accomplishments in your Working CV; eventually Working CV will be too long for practical use • When applying for a new opportunity, create a new Final CV from your working CV that is tailored to that specific opportunity; include most pertinent information
General Guidelines (cont) • Paper • Select high-quality paper but don’t pay high dollars for it! ONU Printing Services packages and sells high quality paper and matching envelopes to students for a fraction of the cost found at retail centers • Paper color?
