Reflection and Formation of Images in Plane Mirrors. A plane mirror is one that is flat Light hits the mirror and reflects back to our eyes. We see an image "in" the mirror. Reflection can occur in water too!. Read Only!.

A plane mirror is one that is flat • Light hits the mirror and reflects back to our eyes. We see an image"in" the mirror
Read Only! • Dyslexia is a condition that many people have – its where people have difficulty reading print • Examples:
Read Only! • One problem with people who have dyslexia is the glare from the light reflecting off white paper • Sometimes using coloured filters helps!
SALT: Characteristics of an Image • An image has 4 characteristics when comparing it to the object • 1.Size: larger or smaller • 2.Attitude(orientation): upright or upside down • 3.Location: closer, farther or same distance Infront/Behind mirror. • 4.Type: virtual (behind mirror) or real (infront of mirror) Remember S.A.L.T
SALT Characteristics of Plane Mirrors • S: Same size • A: Right side up and backwards • L: same distance behind mirror • T: Virtual (not real, can't project it)
Reflection Terms Normal – the line drawn perpendicular to the reflecting surface Incident Ray – a ray traveling towards the reflecting surface
The angle of Incidence (Θi) – the angle between the incident ray and the normal • The point of incidence –the spot where the incident ray hits the reflecting surface
Reflected Ray – a ray of light that bounces off a reflected surface • Angle of Reflection (Θr) – the angle between the reflected ray and the normal
angle of reflection angle of incidence incident ray reflected ray Summary: terms on the reflection of light normal r i
The Law of Reflection 1.) The angle of incidence = the angle of reflection or (Θi = Θr) 2.) The incident ray, reflected ray and normal all lie in the same plane (all flat)
Class Activity We need: • 1 BIG mirror • 1 BIG protractor • 1 string of yarn • 2 students
Look in a mirror Light is reflected. You can see a reflection. 15
Change the direction of the light beam Light is still reflected. You see the reflection in a different location. 16
Types of Reflection: Reflection Specular Reflection Diffuse Reflection • Shiny, smooth surfaces, produces sharp images. 2. Rough surfaces, produce blurry or no image.
