Leaves – Page 10 (The page with the dark circle on the bottom of it)
Cuticle – • Protects the leaf against water loss and insect invasion
Stoma – • One of many small openings that can open and close to allow gas exchange and to prevent water loss
Review Xylem and Phloem • Xylem – carries water and nutrients from the roots to the branches and leaves • Phloem – transports products produced in photosynthesis throughout the plant
1 Palisade mesophyll - upper layer of cells containing cells that absorb light that enters the leaf
2 Upper Epidermis – made of thick cells that resist tearing
3 Cuticle – waterproof barrier that prevents water loss
4 Vascular Tissue – Xylem and Phloem
5 Guard Cells – specialized cells that surround the stoma and control their opening and closing
6 Stoma (plural stomata) – openings in the epidermis that allow CO2, H2O and O2 to diffuse into and out of the leaf
7 Spongy Mesophyll – contains cells for photosynthesis and has air spaces
8 Cuticle – I already gave you the definition for this so I’m not doing it again
9 Lower Epidermis – same as the upper, but lower
10 Air space – connect with the exterior through the stoma
