Poe’s Life • His mother and father were traveling actors. • His parents separated when Poe was very young. • Poe’s mother tragically died of tuberculosis. • Poe was sent to live with the Allan’s a dear friend of his mothers. Mr. Allan and Edgar did not get along.
Poe’s Life • Poe was disinherited by Mr. Allan after Poe was dishonorably discharged from the army for insubordination. • Poe struggled financially for the rest of his life. • He earned money as a writer, magazine editor, and critic. • Poe’s scathing reviews earned him dislike among his fellow authors.
Poe’s Life • Poe met and fell in love with his cousin and eventually married her • Sadly, his happiness was short lived as tuberculosis claimed the life of his wife, Virginia Clemm • A few years after Virginia’s death, Poe died under mysterious circumstances.
Poe’s Death • Poe suffered his entire life from poor health • He was prone to headaches, fits of depression, sensitivity to light, colors and sound (This is reflected in his writing). • Poe died in ill-fitting clothes and in a gutter outside of a bar in Baltimore, Maryland. .After his death Poe’s work became recognized for its genius.
