  1. ESL602 Speaking and Listening 1 Oral Communication Skills

  2. Gestures in Real Life With your partner, discuss: • How easy or difficult was it for you to observe/practice two nonverbal gestures in real life? Why? • Did you feel awkward? Why? • Did you remember to observe your posture and practice awareness of your facial expressions? If not, why did you forget?

  3. Nonverbal Gestures Worksheet Who would like to volunteer to describe your experience with a nonverbal gesture and share it with the class?

  4. Feedback: Listening Log #2 • On the whole, your second Listening Logs were much stronger and more complete than the first Logs! • Fascinating topics; nice choices! • Be careful when reading the directions for your Listening Log Assignments! • Take a look at my comments and ask any questions you may have NOW!

  5. What is a SENTENCE FRAGMENT?

  6. > FANBOYS! < F - forA - andN – nor, not B – but, becauseO - orY - yetS – so • If you BEGIN a sentence with one of the FANBOYS, your sentence will be INCOMPLETE. It will be a FRAGMENT. Do NOT begin a sentence with FANBOYS!!!

  7. FANBOYS, cont. Honestly, “FANBOYS” words rarely add important information to the beginning of a sentence: • So my teacher told me to avoid FANBOYS. • Because she said that it was important to avoid sentence fragments. • And I thought that was a good idea. • But it took some time for me to learn how to avoid FANBOYS in my academic writing.

  8. 3 Ways to Correct FANBOYS Fragments: I wanted to avoid FANBOYS consistently. But it took me some time to learn how to do that. • Combine clauses with a comma  I wanted to avoid FANBOYS consistently, but it took me some time to learn how to do that. • Delete the FANBOYS word  I wanted to avoid FANBOYS consistently. It took me some time to learn how to do that. • Substitute a conjunctive adverb and a comma  I wanted to avoid FANBOYS consistently. However, it took me some time to learn how to do that.

  9. One More Note: Allergens I, along with many other teachers, am allergic to several words that I beg you to NOT USE in academic writing: Stuff Things Really Sort of A bit …What’s the problem? These words are too CASUAL!

  10. A Special Guest • Today, at 12:00, a colleague of mine, Anita, will come to our class to discuss an opportunity with you about participating in her doctoral research. • She will meet and discuss with you from 12:00-12:15 today. This means, we need to HOP TO IT!

  11. Textbook, p. 30-31 Key words help to jog your memory! With your partner, discuss the questions about the reading in Activity 4, p. 31. Together, underlinethe key words that help you locate the information you need to answer the questions.

  12. Art vs. Technology When you give your Informative Presentation on Tuesday, focus on the ART of presenting! Do not allow technological difficulties to “get the better of you!” • Note cards as a guide + PowerPoint • Let’s review the ART of presenting one more time…

  24. 11:40 = Time to Practice! Round 1: You have FOUR MINUTES! This is not an “authentic” practice, because you will only use your note cards (without your PPT). Practice standing while you give your presentation; your partner can remain seated.

  25. Constructive Feedback For now, just two simple questions: 1. What did you MOST ENJOY about your partner’s presentation practice? 2. Was there anything about your partner’s presentation that was CONFUSING (e.g., perhaps a main point was missing, or the conclusion was not clear)? • Give this feedback to your partner, then THANK him/her for his presentation. Now, it’s YOUR turn!

  26. Time to Practice! Round 2: You have FOUR MINUTES! This is not an “authentic” practice, because you will only use your note cards (without your PPT). Practice standing while you give your presentation; your partner can remain seated.
