Honestly, “FANBOYS” words rarely add important information to the beginning of a sentence: • So my teacher told me to avoid FANBOYS. • Because she said that it was important to avoid sentence fragments. • And I thought that was a good idea. • But it took some time for me to learn how to avoid FANBOYS in my academic writing.

8. 3 Ways to Correct FANBOYS Fragments: I wanted to avoid FANBOYS consistently. But it took me some time to learn how to do that. • Combine clauses with a comma  I wanted to avoid FANBOYS consistently, but it took me some time to learn how to do that. • Delete the FANBOYS word  I wanted to avoid FANBOYS consistently. It took me some time to learn how to do that. • Substitute a conjunctive adverb and a comma  I wanted to avoid FANBOYS consistently. However, it took me some time to learn how to do that.

9. One More Note: Allergens I, along with many other teachers, am allergic to several words that I beg you to NOT USE in academic writing: Stuff Things Really Sort of A bit …What’s the problem? These words are too CASUAL!
