A Collaborative Research Proposal: CEHP and Dominica’s Caribs (Kalinago) Dr. Martin Forde1, Dr. Karen Morrison2, Mr. John Hawley3,Dr. Marc Bergeron3, Mr. Lyndon Robertson1 • Purpose/Context • The Caribbean Ecohealth Program (CEHP) invites Carib Community in Dominica (see Figure 1) to learn about this program and to define, if and as appropriate, research and capacity building project, as well as training opportunities related to CEHP’s main themes: • Foodborne, waterborne, zoonotic infectious diseases • Eco-toxicology • The CEHP brings international experts and research and capacity building partnerships, as well as a fully equipped mobile laboratory (see Figure 2), to Dominica in February 2009. • Limited financial resources currently available but will be sought and small programs started. • Expected Results • Short Term (< February 2009) • Research & capacity building programs • Partnership building • Atlantis phase (Feb - Oct, 2009) • Training of Caribs in lab techniques • Carib youth exposure to environmental issues • Long term (> October 2009) • Increased communication between domestic and international research/policy makers • Timeline • Through initial formal and informal contacts • What: Information gathering • Who: John Hawley, Marc Bergeron • When: Now • (Potential) round table meeting (October, 2008) • Arrival of Atlantis Mobile Lab (February, 2009) • Ethical Considerations • To deliberately involve the Carib community in having a say in what is developed/implemented • To create a meaningful, collaborative partnership (modeled on CCGHR’s model) • To ensure sustainability, i.e., conversely to minimize ‘helicopter researching’ Mabrika!
