WHAT ARE PHRASAL VERBS? Paula Sanz Castillo Arancha Zubia Robledano 1º Bach C
They are verbs with prepositional or adverbial particles. Phrasal verbs are made up of more than one part. • Some common examples are: • Putoff: (quitarse…) • Look up: (consultar, buscar, ir a ver) • Take in: (dar cobijo a, alojar, recoger…) • Get out of: (librarse de, dejar, perder la costumbre) • Turn down: (rechazar, no aceptar, denegar, bajar, doblar) • Keep together: (mantenerse juntos, no separarse)
A phrasalverbcreates a meaningdifferentfromthe original verb. • Example: I ran into my teacher at the movies last night. run + into = meet He ran away when he was 15. run + away = leave home
There are no rules that might explain how phrasal verbs are formed correctly. All you can do is look them up in a good dictionary and study their meanings. • LA ÚNICA FORMA DE APRENDER EL SIGNIFICADO ES DE MEMORIA. • Example: Egg on: animar, incitar.
Some phrasal verbs are intransitive. An intransitive verb cannot be followed by an object. • Example:He suddenly showed up. "show up" cannot take an object • *show up: hacer resaltar, destacar, dejar en ridículo, poner en evidencia, notarse,
Some phrasal verbs are transitive. A transitive verb can be followed by an object. • Example:I made upthe story. "story" is the object of "make up“ • *make up: inventar, componer, hacer, formar, representar, maquillar, hacer las paces.
Some transitive phrasal verbs are separable. The object is placed between the verb and the preposition. • Example:I talkedmy mother into letting me borrow the car.She lookedthe phone number up. • *look up: consultar, buscar, ir a ver.
Some transitive phrasal verbs are inseparable. The object is placed after the preposition. • Example:I ran intoan old friend yesterday. They are looking intothe problem. • *look into: investigar. • *ran into:encontrarse a alguien por sorpresa.
