History of the Lagoon • rivers were diverted • channels blocked • stonewall added • 1/3 filled in
Background • Traffic Problems • Introduction of motorized boats • Increased tourist boats • Private Boats • no required license • no age requirements • reckless driving • Many deaths yearly
Background • Environmental Problems • Dredging to accommodate big boats • High speeds causing large wakes
Past Study • Two past Lagoon Wide Boat Counts • Both Weekday • Limited number of spots
Lagoon Wide Boat Count • Assess when • Sunday July 12th 8:30 - 19:30 • Assess where • Visit sites • Assess how • boat type • plates • direction
Boat Manual • Directions • Picture of Location • Boat Reference Sheet • Canali Directions • Other Helpful Hints
Site Specific Count • Locations • Marco Polo Airport (6/21, 7/8), • Torcello (6/20, 7/7), • Punta Sabbioni (7/4, 7/9), • Burano (7/4, 7/7), • Two days for each location: • One count in week days • One count in weekend
Data Collection • Time • Plate and ID number • Type of the vehicle • Number of passengers getting on and off • Direction • Notes
1 day 21 locations Counting all boats passing 1 weekday, 1 weekend day per location 4 locations Counting only commercial and public transportation, arriving and departing Lagoon Wide vs. Site Specific
Recommendations-Airport SITA buses Problem: • Transport few passengers (less than 3 passengers per bus) • Take money from the province Suggestion: • Eliminate the line • make them less frequent and use smaller buses.
Recommendations-Airport • ALILAGUNA: • Direct line to San Marco • Advertisement on Murano exchange • ACTV and ATVO: • A large number of tourists are not aware that there are buses going to Venice • Advertisement on existing lines
Recommendations-Future Studies • Regular studies to follow the changes in boat traffic • A larger group of people • Perform the counts for longer hours • Do more than one weekday and one weekend count • Carry out a survey
