Pre - Presidency • Born on March 18, 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey. • Started of as a lawyer. • Sheriff of Erie County from 1870 – 1880. • Elected mayor of Buffalo, NY. • Elected governor of New York. • Ran for president as a Democrat in 1884.
1884 Election • Ran against Republican James Blaine of Maine. • Mugwumps despised the fact the Blaine was elected due to his previous railroad scandal as speaker of the house. • Blaine was attacked with black mail from Democrats. • Republicans lashed back at the Democrats by spreading how Cleveland put his child up for adoption.
1892 Election • Cleveland lost to Benjamin Harrison in the electoral college of the 1888 election because . • Cleveland was the only president who returned to the White House for a 2nd term defeating Harrison in the election of 1892.
Depression • Passed the Interstate Commerce Act in 1887 establishing the ICC. • Cleveland asked Congress to repeal the Bland – Allison Act which treasury to buy silver. • Cleveland fought to lower tariffs. • Had the Sherman Silver Purchase Act repealed through threats of eliminating finical aid.
Work Strikes • 1894 Jacob Coxey led an “industrial army” of protesters of limited paper money. Cleveland ordered the National Guard to end the protest. • George Pullman’s workers went a strike do to low pay and Cleveland ordered U.S. Marshalls to end the strike. • This events portrayed Cleveland as insensitive to the unemployed.
