  3. PRBBOpen Day 4th October 2008 Aims: • Inform society about what is being done at the PRBB • Promote research among young people and adults • Obtain a feedback from the non-scientific community about research

  4. Format: Saturday, 4th October, from 11:00 to 24:00 with the following activities: In the PRBB : - Visits (building + laboratories) In the inner square : • - Café scientific • Final party At the Plaça Darwin : • - Poster exhibition • Basic scientific experiments

Visitsinsidethebuilding: • Groups of 10 persons + 2 guides (volunteers from the PRBB) • one visit per hour / each visit will last 45 – 60 min • previous registration at the Plaça Darwin will be required 3rd STATION (A) 5th floor: Biochemistry / Cell Biology (Laboratory / Microscope CRG) 3rd STATION (B) 3rd floor: Biochemistry (Culture room / Dark room UPF) 1st STATION 4th floor: Introduction (research done at the PRBB) 2nd STATION: 4th floor: Bioinformatic laboratory

Poster Exhibition: We need clear posters, visual and easy to understand, explaining the main fields or research carried out in this building – at least one volunteer for each area: - Bioinformatics/systems biology (CRG or IMIM) - Gene regulation and epigenetics (CRG or CMRB) - Cellular and developmental biology (CRG or UPF) - Pharmacology and clinical physiopathology (IMIM or UPF) - Epidemiology and public health (CREAL) - Human genetics and evolutionary biology (UPF or CRG) - Stem cell research (CMRB or CRG)

  7. Poster Exhibition: We will also have a poster about the PRBB in general: building and history (PRBB). Scientific posters should be very basic, have an intro to the field and then if the author wants it can have some specific examples of what is being done here, they can mention their own group, etc. Volunteers shall be given a standard template, the necessary logos, etc. We should start this week so as to print them in time!

  8. Experiments Placa Darwin : • Tables with specific topics will be set up: • DNA: - Extract DNA from fruit • - make the structure of DNA from sweets • Protein: • - Show proteins, food etc. as many as possible in sealed bags. • - colouring in sheets for kids to colour in the proteins. • - Then an explanation of how we “see” proteins; • coomassie, western, silver, ponceau.. • 3) Show and Tell • - sealed plastic bags with: frog eggs, drosophila larvae, • yeast, bacteria, zebrafish. On the poster behind we will have • pictures of xenopus, zebrafish, bacteria etc. • 4) Cell • - Large poster of a cell, showing the nucleus etc set up behind. • - Microscope with which people can see the cells of an onion. • 5) A table with description of experiments to take away and try at home.

  9. - 6 volunteers needed What is such building for? Why is it necessary investing money in science? What is science useful for? Why is “people’s money” invested in the PRBB? Café Scientifico Why do scientists invest their time at the lab? Speakers: One Group leader + a PhD student/Post-doc + Public administration involved in research funding

We need volunteers !!! • Distributing posters (libraries, universities, neighborhoods, …) • Poster Exhibition (design, presentation, …) • Experiments • Visits inside the building • Café Scientific (setup video/audio, chairs, … ) • Final Party (Build up/down, bar, …) … at least half of these volunteers should speak Catalan or Spanish How to join us ? - Signing up here!
