How did French get to Québec? • 1534: Jacques Cartier lands (Gouvernement du Québec) • 1608: Samuel de Champlain founds Québec (Gouvernement du Québec) • French and British battled for these new lands • 1774: Québec Act – recognizes Québec’s unique language, religion, and law from that of British North America (Gouvernement du Québec)
Desire for Sovereignty • FLQ – Front de libération du Québec • Terrorist group using graffiti, bombings, kidnappings, and murder to call for an independent Québec (Canada’s Human Rights History) • October 1970: FLQ kidnaps British consulate member and the Minister of Labour • “October Crisis” affected all of Canada
