Why Illustrator? • Logos can technically be made in Photoshop or even InDesign, but . . . • Illustrator creates vector graphics which are scalable and easy to resize • Photoshop is pixel-based and re-sizing can be problematic • InDesign can draw vector graphics but it’s far more limiting than Illustrator
File Formats • .ai- Native file format only readable by Illustrator; save file for internal use while still working on it • .pdf- you know • .eps- (Encapsulated Postscript) popular file format for print production work. Large file size/no support for transparency. Transports vector format to other programs • .svg- XML markup save primarily for web work • Export- to .jpg, .png, .bmp, etc.
Deliverables for our Project • .ai file (File > Save As) • .eps file (File > Save As) • .pngfile (Export> Save > Color: Transparent) • High Resolution .jpg with a bounding box or clipped (Object>Artboard>Fit to Artwork Bounds) • (Export > Save> Quality Maximum)
Color Modes • RGB (red-green-blue): color of the light emitted from computer monitors and televisions. Best for web design. • CMYK (cyan-magenta-yellow-black): ink colors in offset printing. Best for print design. • Our logos will be primarily used for print documents so select CMYK when setting up a new document. (file > new > advanced > color mode)
Important Checks for Set-Up When setting up a new document • CMYK color (for our purposes) • Ensure “Scale Strokes & Effects” option is checked • Select Scale tool (or hit “S”) • Select Preferences in top menu bar • Check box if needed • Size is mostly irrelevant but A4 is a standard working size • File > New > Size > A4
Important Checks @ End • All text converted to outlines • Select Text> Right Click> Create Outlines • Changes text into graphics in case the printer does not have that font • Flatten all the layers for files that are not the .ai • Open Layers Panel • Click/select layer to flatten to • Open layer options (top right button in layer panel) • Select “Flatten Artwork”
Logo Tips • Know what client wants • Sketch it before you open the program • Typeface matters • Keep it simple • Keep it legible • Think about colors (and relation to other colors in full contexts)
