  2. Session 6A Participants SteveWendel – Sinclair CC, MET and the NCME Marshall Gartenlaub – CACT San Bernadino, CA David Bastl – SME Local Chapter Membership, Manufacturing Engineer Dick Morley – Consultant and “free thinker” Karen Wosczyna-Birch - Director of virtual Engineering College of Technology Connecticut Community Colleges, ATE Regional Center - Henry Kraebber – Purdue MET (Statewide Technology) LaRoux Gillespie – SME HQ – Education Taskforce Chair

  3. SME Gateway Community and PRIME – Programs developed to elevate MFG in the Pittsburgh area… Middle School programs…

  4. 2 year - Manufacturing Education Need a clear definition of manufacturing and get user inputs to validate the definitions Need for new people that understand manufacturing – increase enrollments Need to inform and educate people about manufacturing Recommendations on the needed curriculum concepts Articulation agreements from CC to 4-year institutions Industry driven course options Need to increase the quality of graduates Develop manufacturing career awareness materials Linkages from high schools to CC Sustainability… a challenge Service to people for continuing education/skill development Credit Certificates to meet the needs of students

  5. NSF – ATE Centers http://atecenters.org/ Targeted at CC and Associate degree level programs http://www.ncme.org National Center for Manufacturing Education

  6. Manufacturing The application of the process of converting scientific research and technical advancement into useful products for humanity. Making things: Process of transformation of materials into products… A definition needed for 5th grader to a grandmother Dream it – Do it! Dream it – Make it!

  7. Movement of research into the classroom Awareness of emerging technologies Two year college focus: Courses to improve your life Teaching practical manufacturing concepts Proven methods

  8. Emerging Technologies to Include: Nano Technology Applications Nano manufacturing awareness for workforce development – an enabling technology Nano materials and applications in products Manufacturing processes “Art to Part” – design visualization and prototype production Manufacturing for the bio-sciences and biomedical Laser manufacturing Software and manufacturing enterprise systems Simulations – Virtual Labs Games for education Design and Business Systems Green manufacturing technology awareness Life-cycle considerations Alternative energy and energy systems Environmental systems www.idc-online.com

  9. Fading Hydraulic systems being replaced by electrical systems Some process topics: Stick welding Manual machining

  10. Emerging teaching methods Simulation to replace traditional labs Use of computer “games” to illustrate applications and processes On-line learning systems – “On demand” education Blended learning

  11. What can SME do: Attack the national awareness of manufacturing Presentations on the opportunities Tap into under-represented groups Young women Minority community Support for a “National face for Manufacturing” – OCC guys… “Pimp your ride,” Jay Leno – NASCAR – how Oprah – understanding how things works – personal freedom! Oprah – developing nurturing skills for men – personal development Break the stereo type Create a national brand…

  12. 2yr Curriculum issues:Modify and update our offerings… Liberal studies and communications Scientific fundamentals Engineering fundamentals Design for production Engineering materials Manufacturing processes Manufacturing systems Physical controls of manufacturing systems Information controls in manufacturing enterprise Manufacturing management

  13. Reality: 2/3 general education1/3 specialty that could be MFG Only about 6 or 7 technical and manufacturing courses CAD is key This slide stopped….

  14. Strategic level Manufacturing definition… Establish audience dependent definitions Feedback and input required from constituents “Learn how to make things” Faculty Professional Development is critical Message: clarify the message about manufacturing out to the world Identify spokespersons (Jay Leno, Oprah…) Women – “learn to fix it program” Home Depot/SME Connection (corporate partner) Skills USA, FIRST Robotics, others…

  15. Curriculum Common technical + General Education core Project based activities for learning Collaborative vs. Competitive Develop the global connection Pre-engineering Well defined and dictated by the requirements of the Bachelor’s level programs 2yr Technician Consider the Keynote presentation from Chip Emery Present/repackage into small bites (break down 3 cr. Blocks into 1 credit bites) serve instant gratification generation

  16. Delivery Methods Explore new methods Review best practices Keep methods flexible – be ready to adapt as needed to meet the needs of the students/instructors
