  1. WAVE CALCULATIONS March 17, 2014

  2. SOLVING FOR WAVELENGTH (λ) • YOU ARE GIVEN: • The number of waves and the distance (d) they occupy • WAVELENGTH=DISTANCE/# OF WAVES • EXAMPLE: If I have 3 waves in 60 meters, what is the wavelength? • WAVELENGTH = Distance/ # of waves • Wavelength = 60 meters/3 waves • Wavelength = 20 meters

  3. SOLVING FOR FREQUENCY (f) • YOU ARE GIVEN: • The # of waves • The Time (t) • FREQUENCY = # OF WAVES/ TIME • EXAMPLE: If I have 3 waves traveling for 60 seconds, what is the frequency? • FREQUENCY = 3 WAVES/60 SECONDS • FREQUENCY = .05 HERTZ (Hz)

  4. SOLVING FOR WAVE SPEED (V) • If you have any combination of wave speed (v), frequency (f) or wavelength (λ) • WAVE SPEED = FREQUENCY x WAVELENGTH • V = f λ • IT CAN ALSO BE REPRESENTED IN A NIFTY TRIANGLE: V f λ

  5. Example • So, if I have a frequency of 4 Hz and length of 20 meters, what is the wave speed? • WAVE SPEED = FREQUENCY x WAVELENGTH • WAVE SPEED = 4 HERTZ x 20 METERS • WAVE SPEED= 80 m/s

  6. SOLVING FOR WAVE SPEED (V) CONTINUED: • UNITS WILL STAY THE SAME FOR EACH CATEGORY (NO MATTER WHAT) AND ARE AS FOLLOWS: • WAVESPEED IS m/s (meters per second) • FREQUENCY IS Hz (Hertz) • WAVELENGTH IS m OR cm (meters OR centimeters) based on what the problem says.
