Learning Target I can identify the reasons why the USA did NOT want to annex Texas.
Background Info. • In 1836, Tex. was a Republic with slaves • At the time, most Texans wanted to be annexed to the USA • Texans soon realized this would be easier said than done

USA USA Perspective • The issue of the annexation of Texas divided American leaders • At the time, Texas had many issues: • Debt from the Tx. Rev. • Slavery • Problems w/ Mex. • Problems w/ NA • These issues kept the USA. from annexing Texas
Debt • The U.S. did not want to take on more money problems • The USA had just come out of a small depression Where did Texas get this debt? Why would taking on Texas’ debt be considered a negative thing for the USA?
War Mexico • Relations between Mexico, Texas, and the US were tense • Mexico promised war w/ the USA if they annexed Texas • Many leaders in the USA did not want to go to war w/ Mexico. Why would Mexico make this promise? Why do you think the USA wanted to avoid war with Mexico?
Slavery • Slavery was dividing the USA at this time. • Northern states did NOT want slavery • Southern states DID want slavery • If Texas was annexed it would come in as a slave state Why is slavery so important to the people of the south? Why do you think people in the north disliked slavery?
Assignment Create a poster illustrating why Texas should NOT be annexed to the USA. Your poster must include: • A headline • 3 pictures illustrating why the United States said “No” to the annexation of Texas w/ captions • Written response to the following: Pretend you are a Texas Senator. You must convince the United Sates Government why they are wrong in deciding not to annex Texas into their country. You must provide a valid and well-supported argument in your defense.
No to Annexation Poster Rubric • Catchy headline that relates to the United States saying, “No!” (8 pts.) • 3 pictures illustrating why the United said “No” to Texas (12 pts. each) and a caption explaining each picture (12 pts. each) • Short answer (20 pts.)
