I Timothy 2:9-15 MODEST APPAREL
So Many Principles • In This Text – most reflect a behavior attitude. • Meek and quiet spirit – so at odds with today’s attitude. • Are we happier than our great grand parents? • I’m a teacher, not a judge. I’ll be glad to pass judgment on apparel privately.
Modest • “Kosmios” – in good taste. • “Respectable” I Tim. 3:2 • Drawn somewhat from “custom of age”. • Literally, has little to do with how much “skin” we show. • Are we somewhat too informal in many circumstances? • School teachers wear… Preachers wear…
Attire… • Of a widow – Gen. 38:14 • Attire of a harlot – Prov. 7:10 • Virgin – 2 Sam. 13:18 • Goth, skater, punk, etc. • What does our clothing say of us? • “Meek and quiet spirit.” • Seeking the eldership.
Shamefastness • “aidos” – a sense of shame or reverence • “Colorfast” – holds its color, won’t fade. • Jer. 6:15; 3:3; 8:12 • How much can you take off and still exhibit a sense of shame. • Gen. 3:7 – Adam and Eve • Maybe we need to pass this fruit around again…
Sobriety • “sophrosunas” – sound mind • A restraint based on how we impact others and how they impact us. • What do you do to “turn on” the average man? • You don’t. They come from the factory… • Does the way you dress embarrass others? You? • Clothes don’t “make the man” (or woman). But they can say a lot about us.
Jewelry, hair styles… • Do they express who we really are? • “I’m all about show”. • I’m about service and holiness. • I live for heaven, for self and family.
