University Faculty Senate Meeting – December 4, 2012 & Senate Address January 29, 2013 Brian Aynardi
Joint Committee Meeting between Student Life and Global Programs • Internationalization at University Park Campus • Looking into enrollment issues, possible tensions among US and International students • Local authorities interested in interacting more with international student community • Housing is a concern • Penn State ranks #1 among PA universities for economic impact to state, with a large impact coming from international students • Looking into developing peer-mentoring programs to assist international students with move to State College and help them feel welcome and “at-home”
Engaged Scholarship • Joint committee with Rob Pangborn, Damon Sims, and Craig Weideman • Idea is to get faculty to engage with students more one-on-one through class assignments, working individually with students in the lab, etc. • Possible way for new faculty to gain credit towards P&T?
“Honor Code” • Student Caucus will start to work on an Honor Code/Aspirational statement together to bring to the Special Committee developed to implement such a statement • GSA, UPUA, and CCSG senators will work together
UFS Meeting – December 4 • Middle States Commission removed University’s accreditation warning • Recommendations to Governor made on costs of tuition, richness of education, and enhancing PA’s economic vitality • As of 12/3/12, 61 of Freeh recommendations implemented • Schreyer applications up 14% for fall 2013 • Student athlete graduation rate – 88% (91% football)…Div. I average = 80%
Fixed Term vs Standing Term Faculty • 2:1 ratio of fixed to standing • Faculty would like to see a larger number of standing term faculty
New Senate Committee • Extra-Senatorial committee developed • Committee for Campus Athletics
Another NCAA statement… • Another version of the statement from the Senate to the NCAA regarding the sanctions to pledge support for President Erickson, promote culture, and creating a better environment at Penn State through shared governance …After overwhelming negative response, the faculty member who brought the statement withdrew it from consideration and a vote
Behave Yourselves! • As of 12/24/12 • New alcohol fines are: • First offense – up to $500 • Second offense – up to $1000 • DUI and Supplying minors with alcohol – You don’t want that
January 29 Meeting • Statement to be given to the Senate by Brian Aynardi with a history segment to be read by Melissa Creely on increasing cultural diversity awareness • Statement will NOT include any particular recommendations to Senate • Why Passive? WHY NOT! …You catch more bees with honey than vinegar – we need Senate support for curriculum changes to be made • Will provide a “Vision” for what student’s would like to see in Penn State’s future
What we have done to this point… • Included members from a vast majority of the culturally diverse student organizations at UP • Met with President Erickson, Damon Sims, Terrell Jones • Met with faculty senators for advice • Met with Chair Backer • Spoke with Dr. Haynes about Commonwealth involvement in the committee that will be formed • Students representing various student cultural organizations and student government will be present on the floor for the address • It appears that we have support from the administration, senators, students, cultural groups, etc.
