Atomic Theory Cierra Franklin Chemistry September 20, 2011
Democritius • Greek Philosopher • 4th Century • Was the first to discover the atom. • Concluded that it can’t be broken down. • Aristotle and Plato didn’t agree with him.
John Dalton • 1766-1844 • Formulated the “Atomic Theory”
JJ Thomson • 1897 • Discovered the electron (-) while experimenting with cathrode rays. • Estimated weight 1/1840 • Plum Pudding Model
Robert Millikan • 1909 • The “Oil Drop” experiment. • Measured the elementary electric charge (the charge of the electron)
Ernest Rutherford • 1891-1974 • “Goil Foil” Experiment in 1910. • Results: Positively charged nucleus; a small core.
James Chadwick • 1891-1974 • Discovered the neutron in 1932. • The neutron surrounds the nucleus.
Neils Bohr • 1885-1962 • Neils Bohr Model (1913) • Electrons orbit the nucleus in circular paths of fixed energy. • N= energy levels
Quantum Mechanical Model • Deals with subatomic particles as well as atoms, molecules, elements, compounds and much longer systems. • Associated with the quantum theory “matter also has the properties associated with waves.” • Used to explain observations made on complex atoms. • Deals with mathematics.
