Zorro • By Myron. K
Appearance • My length is 72 cm some of my friends are 100 cm . My tail is 25-35 cm and I weigh 9-10 kgs. We have webbed paws that help us move in water. We all have small ears. I am very proud of my long canine teeth. I also have a small bushy tail. My fur is usually reddish-grey but it could be bluish or brownish.
Habitat • I live in many places. I mostly live in aquatic habitats which , means water habitat. We also live in grasslands . One of my nesting grounds is low mountains and I live in rain forests, too. I also inhabit abandoned burrows, but my favourite places are rocks and trees. I inhabit Argentina I also like to live in Peru. It is so peaceful there. You can see that my home is South America.
Diet • I am a carnivore! I eat rodents and frogs. I can also eat bird eggs and birds. I am one of those that can eat scorpions and seeds. I will also eat armadillos.
Reproduction • My mate’s gestation period is two months. We breed in fall. Two to six kits are born in our den. We will give birth once every spring.
Care of Offspring • Because our kit has no fur, I use my fur to protect it. Later , I go hunting to search for food. I won’t let anything stand in my way ! Once I see the prey I get closer and closer and then I strike! After I have the prey, I take it back to the den. My mate and I care for the kit.
Natural enemies • My only enemies are humans and their hunting dogs. I sometimes step into traps which are illegal. How I protect my self, is by using sharp claws to scratch and my sharp teeth to bite. I use my insulating fur to keep warm.
Am I endangered? • Yes, sadly it’s true, I am endangered. My situation is critical. There is illegal trapping and too much hunting. I am being hunted for my meat which is so tasty but don’t taste it! I am hunted also for my pelt.
