Time for A Regime ChangeLuke 19:28-48 • Political unrest in the world affected by changes in government regimes: North Korea Syria • Venezuela
Palm Sunday: • The Jewish people in Israel were also praying for a regime change. • The change Jesus was ushering in had nothing to do with politics. • Jesus wanted a regime change to take place in the hearts of people.
Jesus rides into Jerusalem during the Passover Festival • Jews from all over the known world gathered in Jerusalem • Jesus’ ministry was completed the time had come to reveal his identity as Messiah. • He did it at a time when there would be thousands of Jews gathered together • He did it in Jerusalem - at a place where large crowds would see him • He did it in a way that clearly communicated who he was and what his mission was
The people had great expectations for Jesus. • They eagerly waited for the fulfillment of the prophecies about the Messiah who would come to bring deliverance to them. • Zechariah 9:9 (NIV) - Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Isaiah 62:11 (NIV) - The Lord has made proclamation to the ends of the earth: “Say to the Daughter of Zion, ‘See, your Saviourcomes! See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him.’ ” • Psalm 72:1–4 (NIV) - Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness. He will judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice. The mountains will bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness. He will defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; he will crush the oppressor.
Life in Israel under Roman rule was not pleasant. • The Jewish people had lost their independence. • Roman soldiers paraded the streets • Roman governors ruled over the region • Roman appointed judges administrated the justice system • Jewish tax collectors working for Rome extorted money from the people • Temple High Priests had to also be approved by the Roman authorities.
Rome kept a tight grip on her subjects. • The Romans built a huge fortress right next to the temple. Antonia Fortress
1. Jesus Demonstrates Humility & Service • Jesus sits on the back of a donkey’s colt - direct fulfillment of the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9 • The image communicates a humble, peace-making Messiah. • A donkey the symbol of royalty (1 Kings 1:38-39) but not a Messiah of raw power • He is a Messiah of humility. • Jesus rides into Jerusalem surrounded by his disciples – those he served.
Mark 10:42–45 (NIV) “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Philippians 2:5–8 (NIV) - …Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! • Jesus wants his followers to live with the same attitude of humility and service.
Philippians 2:1–5a (NIV) - If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.
The opposite of humility is pride and arrogance. • We all struggle with pride. • Proverbs 8:12–13 (NIV) - “I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion. To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behaviourand perverse speech. • Jesus set the example of humility and service for us to follow.
2. Jesus Demonstrates Grief Over Superficial Faith • On the journey to Jerusalem Jesus stops and weeps over the city. • Jesus turns the joy of the occasion into sorrow: • Luke 19:42 (NIV) “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. • Why did Jesus weep?
The people’s response toward him was only superficial. • They were fans of Jesus but not committed followers (Kyle Idleman, Not a Fan) • Jesus wept for the people because they were looking for the wrong kind of peace. • they were blind to their need for a spiritual Saviour • They were looking for a regime change in their nation they needed a regime change in their hearts.
What is your view of Jesus this morning? • Are you just a fan in the crowd or are you a committed follower? • know about Jesus vs. having an intimate relationship with him • first priority vs. one of many priorities • a tag along vs. leading the way • Does Jesus weep over the superficial condition of your faith? • Or does he rejoice at your deep commitment and love for him?
3. Jesus Demonstrates the Need for Purity and Righteousness • When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, he didn’t head straight for the Roman fortress to overthrow the political system… • He stops at the temple to clean up the religious system. • Jesus confronts the religious people first – not the Romans.
Amos 5:21–24 (NIV) “I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies. Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! • Jesus is not interested in our religious practices as much as he is interested in the purity and righteousness of our hearts.
Psalm 139:23–24 (NIV) Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. • Is it time for a regime change in your life this Palm Sunday? • put pride aside & humble yourself before God • deepen your commitment to him to be a true follower, not just a cheering fan • examine your heart and do some cleansing of your own temple. • Jesus wants to be the king on your throne.
