Protein- Why do we need it? Protein is the most important nutrient. This is because it is the only nutrient that can be used for growth and the building and repair of body cells.
Proteins - what are they? Proteins are made up of long chains of building blocks called amino acids. There are 20 amino acids that make up proteins! Our bodies can make 11 amino acids called non dispensable amino acids. We need to obtain the other 9 essential amino acids from our diet!
Amino Acids • 10 essential amino acids are needed by children for growth • 8 essential amino acids are needed by adults for the repair and maintenance of body cells
Foods containing all the essential amino acids are said to have high biological value (HBV). HBV foods come from animal sources and include…. Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, milk and cheese. (Soya is the only plant HBV protein!)
Other protein sources from plants include; peas, beans, lentils, cereals such as rice, wheat flour, pasta, nuts & seeds. These foods tend to lack one of the essential amino acids and are said to have low biological value (LBV).
Write down a definition…. High Biological Value (HBV) - Protein foods containing all of the essential amino acids including, meat, fish, cheese, eggs, milk and also soya. Low Biological Value (LBV) - protein foods that lack one of the essential amino acids including, peas, beans, lentils, cereals such as rice, wheat flour, pasta, nuts and seeds.
