ABC Book CRCT Review Overview • In your ABC Book, each letter will represent a different standard. (For example, A is for Antecedent.) • Each day we will review three standards by completing three exercises (three letters) in your booklet.
ABC Book – Front Page (A) • Before you do anything else on the upper right hand corner of the page please put your name and period. • In the lower right hand corner start labeling pages with the alphabet. You will be using the front and back of all pages. • Choose a topic or theme for your book. You will use this topic throughout the ABC book, so make sure you know a lot about it!!!!
Antecedent • Define antecedent. • Write two sentences about your topic that contain an antecedent. • For each sentence, draw a box around the pronoun and arrow back to the antecedent. • Define Appositive and give one example.
Boy, I love to write! • List the five steps of the writing process. • Describe what is included in each step.
Clauses • Define independent, dependent, adverb clauses and adjective clause. • Write an example of a dependent clause and an independent clause. • Then write two sentences about your topic one with an adverb and one with an adjective clause underlined.
Draw • Draw a picture containing 7 prepositions based on your topic. • Example: everything a squirrel can do to a tree. • Label the drawing with 7 prepositions.
tensE • List the six tenses that verbs can have. • Record two examples of singular and plural for each tense listed in your grammar handbook. • Define Past Participle and Future Perfect Tense. Give an example of each.
Figurative language • Define simile, metaphor, personification, and hyperbole. • Describe your topic using the above types of figurative language and label them.
Genres • Define the following writing genres: narrative, persuasive, expository, and technical. • Describe which genre would contain your nonfiction topic.
parts of speecH • Define noun, pronoun, adjective, article, verb, adverb, and preposition. Write the page number where you found these definitions. • Then write three sentences about your topic. All of the above parts of speech need to be labeled one time somewhere in your sentences.
Interjection • Define interjection. • Record the 12 most commonly used interjections in the grammar handbook.
conJunction • Define conjunction. • Record the purple box of coordination conjunctions and green box of correlative conjunctions in the grammar handbook. • Then write four sentences about your topic. Underline all of your conjunctions.
Kinds of Sentences • Define interrogative, exclamatory, imperative, and declarative sentences. • Write an example of each type of sentence using your nonfiction topic.
Lucky • Luckily you are ALMOST halfway there! • Find the definition for Adjective CLause. Write two sentences about your topic with an adjective clause underlined.
Modifier • Define adverb and adjective. • Create a TEN sentence paragraph on your nonfiction topic using FIVE adverbs and FIVE adjectives.
antoNym • Define antonym. • Identify five words that can be used to describe your topic. • Then write an antonym for each word.
synOnym • Define synonym. • Identify five words that can be used to describe your topic. • Then write a synonym for each word.
comPlements • Define complement. • List the types of complements. (There are 4) • Write five sentences about your nonfiction topic that contains a complement. • Label the subject, verb, and complement in each sentence.
Questions • Define indirect and direct objects. • Identify which questions both types of objects answer about a verb. • Write 5 sentences about your topic that contains a direct and indirect object. • For each sentence, label the direct and indirect object.
extRaneous details • What is an extraneous detail? • Define Run-On sentence and Sentence Fragment. • Give an example of each. • How do you fix a Run-on Sentence?
tranSition • Define transitional words and phrases. • List 20 common transitional words and phrases from your grammar handbook. • Then make up five sentences on your topic using transitional words and phrases. • Record and give the page number where each sentence can be found.
senTence structure • Define the four types of sentence structures and record the page number where you got the definitions. • Make an example of each type of sentence from your nonfiction book.
