Leadership means organizing a group of people to achieve specified tasks (company‘s goals). • Motivationisanintegral part of leadership. The motiveis the inner reason (impulse) for particular behaviour. Leadership
Leadership Leadership is realized through direct and indirect effects: Direct effects = workers are given particular tasks and these tasks are supervised by management Indirect effects= staff motivation Both types should be appropriately combined in order to achieve the most effective leadership.
Motivation Worker‘s performance depends on his abilities, conditions and motivation. Basic principles of motivation: justice impartiality adequacy praise in public– to punish face to face create a suitable working atmosphere prevent errors through warning reward for specific results
Extrinsic • salary • rewards, bonuses • benefits • (holiday benefit, usage of company‘s car for personal purposes….) • Intrinsic • appreciation • praise • flexible working hours Motivation
Positive = praise Negative = criticism Motivation
Assumptions for effective leadership Manager needs for effective leadership following: to know their subordinates – their personality, abilities and character - to know a type and an extent of work performed by workers - to have leadership experience
Effective leadership Effective leadership can be divided into 3 groups: 1) ineffective leadership = a group of workers does not change their behaviour according to the manager‘s wishes 2) successful leadership = a group of workers will change their behaviour thanks to the manager‘s effort 3) effective leadership = is considered as an effective leadership; moreover, workers feel personal satisfaction and benefit from their activities
Leadership styles • Leadership style = a way of manager‘s behaviour to his subordinate units. • Leadership theory distinguishes many different leadership styles and emphasizes that there is not the only correct leadership style. None of the leadership styles can be used in any situation. • Leadership styles (the most often): • autocratic • democratic • liberal
Autocratic style • It is based on the commands • Manager requires and monitors their performance • He makes decisions on his own • He does not cooperate with subordinates • Democratic style • He works with subordinates and listens to their views • He has a natural authority • He makes the final decisions by himself • Liberal style • He does not use commands • He does not affect the activities of subordinates • The decisions are made by subordinates
Difference between management and leadership Management • It includes managerial activities such as planning, organizing…. • Not all activities are focused on the interaction between managers and their colleagues • It is focused on logical and rational aspects Leadership • It refers to the direct effects of people • It is focused on the emotional aspect • It is only a part of the management „Leadership is doing the right things while managing means doing the things right.“
