First steps Getting the reader’s attention • If you want someone to care about your opinion, give them something interesting to read! • Look at the title you have chosen, how can you grab the reader’s attention? • eg. Peru is a fantastic country with a lot to offer, but many people still think it is better to take holidays abroad.
Your thesis statement What’s the point?! • Think about what you want to say about your title. • What is your opinion? • How can you support your opinion? • eg. I am going to compare a holiday on the Riviera Maya, Mexico, with a holiday in Cuzco, Peru, to show that Peru’s food, tourist attractions and improved tourist facilities make this country a world-class holiday destination.
Your paragraphs: the meat in the burger • Each paragraph should start with a topic sentence. This tells the reader what you will discuss in that paragraph. • Refer to your thesis statement to put your ideas in order. • Then, find at least three good examples to show the reader your point. • Remember to compare and contrast in your examples!
From thesis statement to topic sentence Thesis statement I am going to compare a holiday on the Riviera Maya, Mexico, with a holiday in Cuzco, Peru, to show that Peru’s food, tourist attractions and improved tourist facilities make this country a world-class holiday destination. Topic sentences • Eating is often the biggest free-time activity on holiday, so a country with excellent national cuisine is important. • The main attraction when choosing a holiday destination is often related to exciting things to see and do, and Peru has plenty to offer. • Of course, the best holiday in the world can be ruined by a bad hotel or tour experience.
Your paragraphs: the meat in the burger • Things to remember: • Keep to your thesis • Relate each example to your thesis • Remember – your opinion counts, be confident and make strong statements.
Conclusions • Your conclusion should: • Restate your thesis in slightly different words • Remind the reader of the most important examples • Be persuasive • Remember to list all your sources in a bibliography at the end of your essay. Any unreferenced words that are not your own writing are plagiarised.
