Ocean Electricity Ari Morse and Cody Nabong
Peltier Units Produce electricity when a temperature differential is placed on it (i.e. on side is hotter than the other). This is called the Seebeck effect.
General Information Because of the different specific heats of the ocean and the air surrounding it, they have different temperatures for most of the day. During the day, the water is still cold while the air has warmed up quickly. At night, the water has been warmed but the air has cooled down. Colder Hotter Colder Hotter
Our Plan Use the ocean as a thermoelectric generator by setting up a peltier unit with one side facing the air and the other side in contact with the water. DAY NIGHT - + + -
Limitations/Advantages Limitations: Not a lot of electricity generation expected Advantages: Can run all year and most of the day; little human intervention needed
