EVOLUTION OF CONTENT OPTIMIZED NETWORKS (eCON) • eCON includes the concepts of Information Centric Networking (ICN), but focuses on the increasing role of content: • Consumers are placing greater value on content. • Mobile content delivery is creating new markets. • New methods of content generation at the edge of network. • Broad participation from all sectors of industry. • Transformative approach based on content naming. • Integrates with 5G, IoT, Future of the Internet. Extends existing research and experimentation around ICN concepts to create structure and operationalize this evolution.

EVOLUTION OF CONTENT OPTIMIZED NETWORKS (eCON) • Identify the attributes that define the future state of a content optimized network: • Aspirational goals for user experience. • New multipath delivery methods aligned with 5G. • Security and trust model. • Determine level of alignment around network vision. • Identify evolutionary steps that add value: • Common naming structure for the industry. • Content storage and delivery methodology. • Interworking with current IP protocols during the evolution.

ATIS’ NFV FORUM • 2015: • Published NFV Forum Use Cases document (ATIS-0200012). • Initiated focus on inter-administrative NFV requirements. • 2016: • Publish inter-administrative domain NFV technical requirements and high-level architecture specification based on use cases. • Specification of service catalog to automate discovery of services. • Greater focus on customer-facing and resource-facing aspects of NFV services. • Integration of inter-administrative domain with ordering and billing systems – coordinating with ATIS’ expertise in its Ordering and Billing Forum.

OPEN SOURCE PROJECTS • oneM2M Open Source Community: Launched in November 2015 • A comprehensive Open Source implementation to complement oneM2M specifications, drive adoption, and enhance commercial value. Analysis of IPR/open source licenses underway. • Number Assignment/Distributed Registry: Launching • Evaluate feasibility of mechanisms to support a distributed registry for number assignment to meet operators’ needs. • WebRTC Signaling Server: Launching • Feasibility of an Open Source solution to enable VoIP communications as a customizable service enabler, extendable to many applications.

EMERGENCY SERVICES • Wi-Fi Emergency Calling • Developing use cases and identifying key requirements; white paper targeted for 2Q2016. • Program Manager for critical U.S. initiatives, per FCC requirements: • Test Bed: Oversee testing of indoor wireless location technologies to support carrier compliance for existing deployed technologies (Stage 1); testing of future technologies will occur in Stage 2. • Nationwide Emergency Address Database (NEAD): Developed requirements to support ability to ascertain location of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth beacons; overseeing vendor buildout and launch. • Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS) • Developed feasibility study. Engaging government and seismic representatives to explore how commercial cellular networks may be used to disseminate EEWs. • LMR/LTE Interoperability • Update contained in GSC EM Task Force presentation (agenda item #3).

VEHICLE CYBER RISK • Spearhead direct industry-to-industry dialogue with the vehicle OEMs to develop improved cybersecurity solutions, standards, protocols, processes, etc. • Across the connected vehicle ecosystem. • In addition to bi-lateral company to company initiatives. • Objectives: • Provide ICT leadership in standards and state-of-the-art cyber development. • Accelerate connected vehicle diffusion (due to reduced security concerns). • Reduce risk for drivers and passengers. • Reduce liability for the OEMs and their suppliers (including the ICT industry). • Reduce cyber insurance premiums. • Gain policy-maker confidence in next generation vehicle technology development.

  10. SMART CITIES • Smart Cities adoption is rapidly expanding. • New vertical applications are fueling development, often based on unique geographic and municipal needs. • Internationally, Smart Cities frameworks are under development (potentially leading to more unified approach). • ATIS is exploring how to enhance Smart Cities planning and increase future investments: • Increase knowledge of network and technology evolution (and associated timing) to guide local planning. • Broaden government/commercial view to extend beyond core municipal services to include private sector. • Develop roadmap that integrates network-enabled technology developments with emerging vertical applications.

  11. CALLING PARTY ANTI-SPOOFING • Calling Party Anti-Spoofing: • Caller ID spoofing is a growing problem in North America, and coming under increasing legislative and regulatory scrutiny. • Limited understanding of the scope of the problem, industry efforts, and inherent limitations. • Flexible, forward-looking response required to address Caller ID spoofing – similar to cybersecurity defense. • ATIS Initiatives: • Working with IETF to define long-term solution that is also practical for near-term deployment. • Released white paper summarizing complexity of the problem and practical industry initiatives.

  12. TESTBEDS • Testbeds Focus Group: • All-IP transition has many open technical issues that would benefit from industry testing. • VoIP Routing mechanisms. • Number provisioning in distributed registry. • Caller ID verification (IETF STIR). • ATIS is developing: • Reference architecture for tests. • Detailed test plans. • Testing timeline. • Initial tests will begin 2H 2016.
