  1. Data Analytics & Energy Management Systems for Microgrids Reza Iravani (iravani@ecf.utoronto.ca) Report on Project 1.2 and 2.2 NSMG-Net Annual Meeting Vancouver, BC July 26 ,2013

  2. Presentation Layout - Introduction • Types of Microgrids &Modes of Operation • Distribution-EMS Domain of Coverage and Functions • Industrial Collaborations • Study Systems & Methodology

  3. Service Provider Operation Market Customer and DG Transmission & Bulk Renewables Distribution & DG Bulk Generation Power Grid Domains within the Power Grid Domains DG: Distributed Generation

  4. Service Provider Customer and DG Market Operation Bulk Generation Transmission & Bulk Renewables Distribution & DG Smart Grid Cyber-Physical Network Signal Flow Power Flow Domain

  5. Service Provider C-EMS Customer and DG Market Operation D-EMS T-EMS Bulk Generation Transmission & Bulk Renewables Distribution & DG Smart Grid Cyber-Physical Network and Energy Management systems EMS Signal Flow Energy Management System Power Flow Domains

  6. Definition of Microgrid: • Aggregate of distribution feeders down stream to (or including) a distribution substation (We use terms microgrid and distribution system interchangeably.)

  7. Types and Operational modes of the Microgrid: • (Remote Microgrid) • Rural Microgrid - Grid-Connected Mode - Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Mode - Internally-Controlled Mode - Islanded Operation - Transition Between the Two Modes • Urban Microgrid - Grid-Connected Mode - Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Mode - Internally-Controlled Mode - Islanded Operation - Transition Between the Two Modes

  8. Types of and Operational Modes of Microgrids : • (Remote Microgrids) • Rural Microgrids - Grid-Connected Mode - Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Mode - Internally-Controlled Mode - Islanded Operation - Transition Between the Two Modes • Urban Microgrids - Grid-Connected Mode - Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Mode - Internally-Controlled Mode - Islanded Operation - Transition Between the Two Modes

  9. Distribution EMS (D-EMS): • Legacy D-EMS: A set of analysis and decision making tools to support/assist the operator for monitoring and operation of the distribution system. (Substation Automation and Integration of IEC61850) • Smart Grid D-EMS: A set of analysis and decision making tools for automated monitoring, operation, control, protection and optimization of the distribution system with provisions for the operator intervention. (Feeder Automation based on telemetry)

  10. Our Approach to D-EMS Development: Augmentation and enhancement of the legacy D-EMS with faster, “new” and more encompassing strategies and algorithms based on use of ICTs to provide new applications.

  11. D-EMS Hardware Platform D-EMS platform is a utility-grade off-the-shelf hardware platform which includes (i) embedded computational resources and (ii) proprietary software-based algorithms to execute LDC-tailored D-EMS functions. D-EMS also can include: - Graphical user interface, • Human-machine interface, • Bi-directional communication with components/subsystems in its domain of operation/influence.

  12. Sources of Data for D-EMS: • Substation based measurements • Feeder based measurements • Customer site data

  13. D-EMS Analytical Functions: • Data Acquisition!? • Data/Signal Processing!? • Data Analytics!? • Analysis!? D-EMS Applications Functions: • Continuous Control • Discrete Event Control • Protection • Fault Management • Asset Management

  14. Methodology: - Steady State Analysis - Open Access Analysis Tool • Transient Studies - PSCAD/EMTDC - Faster-than-Real-Time Digital Simulator (FRTDS) • Verification/Validation - RTDS-based Hardware-in-the-Loop Real-time simulation
