I thank God I speak in tongues more than you all. (1 Cor 14.18) For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.(1Cor 14.2)
WHY SPEAK IN TONGUES? TO BUILD YOURSELF UP B. TO BUILD OTHERS UP
TO BUILD YOURSELF UP • “…we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” (Acts 2:11) • For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. (Acts 10:46) • Paul uses phrase “giving thanks with your spirit”(1 Cor 14:16) • I will sing with my spirit and I will sing with my mind also. (1 Cor 14: 15) Tongues as a language of praise
TO BUILD YOURSELF UP • For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also. (1 Cor 14: 14,15a) Tongues as a language of prayer
TO BUILD OTHERS UP • Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 1 Cor 14:1 The ABCs of Spiritual Gifts
TO BUILD OTHERS UP • Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up. (1Cor 14:5) • For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. (1 Cor 14.14,15) When used in gatherings like cell groups and worship service
