How can we heal our humanity?

In this PBL task, students explore privilege, power dynamics, and diverse perspectives, with a focus on LGBTQI, women, cultural groups, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Asian, refugees or people with disabilities. They will deliver a 5-minute interactive session addressing supporting questions related to understanding and respecting differences, inclusive storytelling, and fostering better human nature.

  1. How can we heal our humanity? Year 9 PBL PDHPE & HSIE

  2. Welcome to your first PBL task for the year. This assessment is based on the learning you have and will complete this term. So far you have studied • Geography – Changing Places and Urbanisation • History - Progressive ideas and movements (1750–1918) • PDHPE – Exploring ones own beliefs and the beliefs and perspectives of others.

How can we heal our humanity In PDHPE and HSIE you have looked at a variety of young people who have experienced significant choices and change in their lives In this task you will be asked to unpack the meaning of privilege, deconstruct the myth of power and understand diverse perspectives with a focus on LGBTQI, women, cultural groups, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Asian, Refugees or people with disabilities.

How can we heal our humanity • 3-4 per group • Deliver a product in a 5-minute interactive session in front of an audience. • Products may include: • Artworks, • Impact endeavours (campaigns, donation drives), • Culinary experiences, • Performances (dance, rap, acoustic), • Talks, • Poem/book/form of writing, • Role plays.

Supporting questions • How do people talk about differences and hear each other? • What voices are we not hearing? • How does this impact the shaping of individual identity? • How do we experience each other’s stories? • What choices do you face when speaking up? • What power lies in demographics? • How do these impact on group identity? • What does it mean to listen honestly and speak honestly? • How can we foster the better side of human nature? • How does each person’s story contribute to the larger narrative of Australian history? (resilience, overcoming adversity)

  6. Product Presentation • Interactive session in front of an audience • Groups of 3-4 • 5 min presentation • Ensure the supporting questions are addressed. If they are not clearly addressed, expect the panel of assessors to ask additional questions after your interactive session • Submission of personal online journal

  7. Personal ONLINE Journal • You will be required to complete an online journal in Google docs that documents the process, research, meetings and required PDHPE and HSIE components. • You will be required to update your journal whenever you work on the project so that the teachers can see the progress you have made.

  8. Journal Contents • Meeting" minutes • Evidence of the distribution of roles • Allocation of reading/listening resources and nots of discussion on those resources • Where the group is up to • What is required to move forward • Ideas/feedback discussed at the meetings • Concept maps • Drafts • Any research information found (Links to websites and resources) • Required free writing on discrimination • Required free writing on progressive ideas • Annotations on allocated reading/listening resource • Self - Reflection of own participation within the group

  9. Journal Due Dates The final journal must be submitted via Google Classroom by 10.00PM on 8/3/19.

  10. Process • Issued the assessment (Wk 4) • 3 day workshop (Wk 4) • Submit Draft 1 (P3 Wednesday Week 4) • Feedback/Peer Evaluation Day + Draft #2 (Week 5, 27/2) • Independent work (Wks 4 – 7) • Presentation + Annotated Bibliography (Wk 7) • Complete task evaluation (Wk 7-8)

  11. Drafting/Planning It is important to produce drafts, revise and amend your ideas as you progress. In order to facilitate this, each group will be required to complete two drafts where the teacher will give feedback and discuss your progress Planning/Drafting : Wk 4 and 5 To be submitted/shown to the teacher of the designated workshop on the 20/2 and the 27/2

Marking Task is out of 40 • 20 marks - HSIE • 20 marks - PDHPE There will be a mark awarded per group for the product and interactive session Students will be allocated a mark out of 5 every lesson. These marks are added over the intensive school days to form a total collaboration and participation mark.

  17. Collaboration Communication Time Management • You will be asked to reflect on the contributions that you and other group members have made • You need to honestly and maturely assess the group performance. • The reflection asks you to consider three key areas:

  18. Remember this is a COLLABORATIVE TASK You should work with each other, bounce ideas off each other and give and receive feedback. Its not a task that you throw together the night before Good luck =)
