  2. Why should I care about accessibility? Blindness • There are approximately 10 million blind and visually impaired people in the United States, about 3 out of 100. • There are approximately 93,600 visually impaired or blind students, 10,800 of whom are deaf-blind. • Using screen readers on an accessible web page, a blind person can access the same information as a sighted person.

  3. Why should I care about accessibility? Why should I care about accessibility? • Hearing Loss & Deafness • Your chances of experiencing hearing loss by age 65 is 1 in 3. • The web is a major way for deafand hard of hearing persons to communicate.

  4. How does the average user benefit? • Portability – accessible content transfers more easily to PDAs, cell phones, etc. • Consistency makes your design user-friendly. • Accessible web pages simplify understanding for all users, whether or not they are disabled. For example, have you ever used your mouse to hover over a button or graphic to get a better idea of what it represents?

  5. How can AccVerify help? • Customizable to your detection criteria. • Finds Section 508 and/or W3C compliance problems. • Can help to edit HTML pages for accessibility.

  6. Downloading AccVerify • Download HiSoftware AccVerify from http://software.clemson.edu/licensed/HiSoftware/acc10.exe • Follow the installation instructions closely in the “Installing HiSoftware AccVerify “ instructions.

  7.
