What is brachycephalic syndrome ? • Brachycephalic airway obstruction syndrome (BAOS) • Breeds with short heads • Virtually all dogs of these breeds have some degree of increased work associated with breathing from the time they are born • Varying degrees • Most common anatomical features: Elongated and fleshy soft palate Narrowed nostrils ( changes to the larynx (everted laryngeal succules)) ( Small trachea (hypoplastic trachea))
What breeds ? • English bulldog • Boston terrier • Pekingese • Cavalier King Charles spaniel • Chinese shar-pei • French bulldog • Lhasa apso • Shih tzu • Boxer
Case history: Tarzan • Sudden death • Male, 9 months • Respiratory problems (normal ?) • Now and then more problems than its female companion and especially during the warm month of August the owner tried to give the animal more air and refreshment
