  3. LOCATION • Located in the present-day country of Iraq • Located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers • It was approximately 300 miles long and 150 miles wide

  4. PLACE • Northern Mesopotamia is made up of hills and plains • The land is quite fertile due to seasonal rains, and the rivers and streams flowing from the mountains. • Southern Mesopotamia is made up of marshy areas and wide, flat, barren plains

  5. The Land Between Two Rivers • Mesopotamia is located between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. • Called the “Fertile Crescent” for rich farmland. • The first settlers were farmers and fisherman.

  6. Working With Water • Flooding provided silt, a rich mixture of rock and soil. • Silt made the nearby land possible to farm. • Drought or times without rain made farming difficult. • Irregular flooding and droughts caused Mesopotamians to find was of getting water to their fields. This was Irrigation.
