The Treaty of Versailles And The adjusted winner method Rajit krishnamurthy
Background • Took place in Europe • Began on July 28th, 1914 • Ended on November 11th, 1918
More background June 28th, 1914: Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria by a Yugoslav nationalist in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina On July 28th, the Austro-Hungarian alliance invaded Serbia Boom, it’s on
US involvement Unauthorized German submarines along the US East coast Germany's resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare in the spring of 1917 provided the final straw for US politicians The Lusitania, a British transport ship bound for Britain from New York, was sunk by a German U-boat 1195 people died, including 128 Americans America declared war in 1917
Results of the War Allied victory Our way of life is protected
Results of the War End of the German, Russian, and Austro-Hungarian Empires Formation of New Countries in Europe and the Middle East Transfer of German colonies and regions of the former Ottoman Empire to other powers Establishment of the League of Nations • Allied victory • Our way of life is protected
Adjusted Winner Items (simplified) Receiving postwar reparations Preservation/growth of own territories Postwar Allied presence in Germany Severe restrictions on the enemy military Responsibility for causing the war to come about
Receiving Postwar Reparations • Germany was in bad economic shape after the war, so paying reparations would cripple the economy • Germany assigns 59 points to receiving reparations • Britain was accustomed to trading with Germany, so Britain would’ve liked Germany to pay little • Very little land damage • Allies assign 15 points to receiving reparations – it wasn’t needed as much
Preservation/Growth of Own Territories France had lost some land to Germany in 1871’s Treaty of Frankfurt Other smaller Allied nations also wanted land No real threat to British or US territory Allies assign 35 points Germany didn’t want to lose any land either Germany assigns 25 points
Postwar Allied Presence in Germany • Of course, Allies wanted to monitor German operations after the war • Size • Activity • Allies allocate 20 points • Germany obviously didn’t want this – allocate 1 point
Severe Restrictions on Enemy Military Allies wanted to make sure Germany didn’t cause any more problems Allies allocate 30 points Germany obviously lost, and they wouldn’t want Allied threats around, so they also wanted restrictions placed on the enemy Germany allocates 14 points
Responsibility for the War to Come About Let’s be honest, nobody wants it. Allies allocate 0 points Germany allocates 1 point, because let’s be real.
Reapportionment Reparations can be divided between the two (although in reality one party would just pay less) However, Germany already gets that item, so it’s possible to cut down on Allied postwar presence in Germany. 85-20x=60+x x=1.19 Both are left with 61.2.
But Germany Lost, so… • Germany is required to pay 132 billion Marks (German currency), equivalent to $442 billion these days • Germany gave up a lot of its territory to France and other neighboring countries • The size and operations of the German military were severely reduced • Size • Structure • Allied troops occupied Rhineland for 15 years • Germany is blamed for the entire war and all Allied civilian casualties • The League of Nations is created, later to become the UN
What Actually Happened • Germany is left with nothing but the blame • Recalculated Adjustment Winner: • Allies: 100 • Germany: 1 • America
