Good Humor Sculpture Objective: Students will create a Funk Art ceramic sculpture in the style of David Gilhooly or Arneson, emphasizing humor and play-on-word qualities.
Funk art is an art movement inspired by popular culture that used an unlikely mixture of materials and techniques, including found objects. It was a reaction against the nonobjectivity of abstract expressionism. The movement’s name is derived from the musical term ‘funky’, describing the passionate, sensuous, and quirky. It was a popular art form in the 1960s and 1970s, mainly in the United States. Funk artists treated their work with humour and autobiographical references. They sought to reintroduce social responsibility into contemporary art.
David Gilhooly • is a well-known sculptor, who is recognized primarily for his ceramic sculpture of animals, food, planets and the FrogWorld.
Robert Arneson • Starting in the 1960s, Arneson and several other California artists began to abandon the traditional manufacture of functional items in favor of using everyday objects to make confrontational statements. The new movement was dubbed " Funk Art," and Arneson is considered the "father of the ceramic Funk movement."
Arneson used common objects in his work, which included both ceramic sculptures and drawings. He appeared in many of his own pieces — as a chef, a man picking his nose, a jean-jacketed hipster in sunglasses.
