Overview: Science Skills Package • Lab safety............................................................2 • Safety Symbols....................................................3 - 4 • Safety Cases........................................................5 - 8 • Lab Equipment....................................................9 • Measurement and Math in Science (Significant Digits, Scientific Notation)……….…...10 - 13 • The Scientific Method Planner............................14 • How to Write a Lab Report.................................15 • Data Analysis and Graphing................................16 - 19 • Science Terminology...........................................20
Learning Goals • Learning goals are what we want to learn each day, you can think of it as a “target” or a “bullseye” on a dart board • Each day we will explore a new learning goal in class
Success Criteria • You can think of success criteria as the “pathway” to reaching the learning goal • These are important to understand if you want to achieve the learning goal
Day 1: Lab Safety • Learning Goal: to identify and describe lab safety procedures • Success Criteria: • I am able to list various lab safety procedures (including WHMIS and HHPS) • I am able to remember and apply lab safety procedures when conducting a science lab in class
Lab Safety • Using your sticky note, list out as many lab safety procedures as you can think of! • Let’s see whocan develop the biggest list • You have 2 minutes ....3,2,1 GO!
Page 2 “ECI SCIENCE CLASSROOM LAB SAFETY RULES” • Let’s read them together • What stands out the most to you?
Page 3: SAFETY SYMBOLS • HHPS: Hazardous Household Products Symbols • These symbols are found on household products. They explain why a product is dangerous.
Assignment: Household Products “At Home” Activity • Purpose: To investigate safety information (and HHPS) for common household products. • Materials: pen, paper, various household products • Procedure: Record information for any 2 household products in the chart below.
Page 4 • WHMIS Symbols: Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System Symbols • WHMIS symbols were developed to standardize labelling of dangerous materials used in the work places including schools. Pay attention to warning symbols on materials and handle them carefully.
Compressed gas Flammable and combustible material Oxidizing material Corrosive Material dangerously reactive material biohazardous infectious material Poisonous and infectious material causing immediate and serious toxic effects Poisonous and Infectious material causing other toxic effects
Science Lab Safety : Next Steps • Complete Safety Scenarios pages 6 – 8 in your skills pages • HMWK: find 2 items that have HHPS symbols (be sure to tell your parents what you are doing!)
