Mission Statement  The Mission of the Sprayberry High School Counseling program is to assist students in overcoming barriers that impede learning through a focus on academic, personal/social and career development so they are successful in school and are prepared to become responsible members of society.

Graduation Requirements 4 Credits of English 4 Credits of Math 4 Credits of Science 3 Credits of Social Studies 3 Credits from CTAE/Foreign Language/or Fine Arts 1 Credit of Health and Personal Fitness (.5 credit in each) 4 Elective Credits 23 Credits for Graduation Pass one End of Course Test (EOCT) in each of the four content areas OR pass the corresponding subject test of the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT). The EOCT counts 15% of the course grade. Students must also pass the Georgia High School Writing Test (GHSWT).

Graduation Requirements are for Georgia Schools • Graduation requirements are set forth by Georgia’s Board of Regents which establishes the admissions requirements for Georgia’s colleges and universities. • Students should check the admissions requirements of the particular college they wish to attend • For example, the University of South Carolina requires a Fine Art credit

ACT • American College Assessment (ACT) • Measures classroom achievement (knowledge) in four broad content areas as well as the ability to reason and to apply problem-solving skills • Four content areas: English, Math Science, Reading • Mathematics section contains pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry • No guessing penalty and all multiple choice • Four sub scores with a composite score ranging up to 36 points • The writing test, which is optional, measures skill in planning and writing a short essay. • Visit www.act.orgfor more information

SAT Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) • Measures academic aptitude (critical thinking) in terms of verbal and mathematical reasoning and the ability to recognize standard written English • Verbal section contains antonyms, analogies, sentence completion and reading comprehension in various subject areas • Mathematics section contains arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and logic and operations • Guessing penalty • 800 possible points for the verbal section • 800 possible points for the math section • 800 possible points for the writing section • Visit www.collegeboard.com for more information. The Star Student of each high school is the senior who has the highest SAT taken in one sitting by November of the year preceding their graduation.

Admissions Tests continued • COMPASS – placement tests for Technical College admission – register directly at the technical college you choose to apply to. • SAT Subject area tests – for a small group of top students applying to America’s very best colleges and universities, Harvard, Stanford, Georgetown, among others • Learn more at www.Collegboard.com • ASVAB – Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, most widely given test in the United States. It combines a multiple-aptitude test with an interest self-assessment a wide range of career exploration tools • Learn more at www.asvabprogram.com/ • FEE WAIVERS – if you are eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch, you qualify to receive 2 fee waivers for the ACT and SAT, 4 in total. 21. Dual Enrollment • Allows students to take college courses in lieu of high school courses. The courses provide dual credit—fulfilling graduation requirements as well as credits toward a college degree.

COLLEGe CREDIT NOW SUMMIT For: Parents of 10th & 11th Grade students October 29th from 6:30 until 8:40 at the North Metro Campus of Chat Tech College Presenting colleges will include: KSU, Georgia Highlands, Southern PolyTechnic, Chat Tech Please keep in mind that some schools, like Kennesaw State University, require Dual Enrollment students to have taken the SAT/ACT. KSU’s application deadline is January 15th, so be sure to sign up the SAT/ACT before the January deadline.

COLLEGE FAIRs 100 Black Men of Atlanta 2013 College Fair is Saturday, October 5th, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC) – Building C-4 (off of Northside Drive in Atlanta). Turner Chapel AME Education Ministry College Fair is Sat. Oct. 26, 2012 from Noon-3 pm, at the Chapel in Marietta East Cobb Area High Schools will host a spring semester College Fair at Wheeler High School on March 18, 2014.
