What is ISS • The International Space Station is an international collaboration to build and maintain a long term presence in outer space.
ISS Attitude • The ISS incorporates different flight attitudes in order to maximize power and minimize negative thermal effects. • The ISS orbit is aligned 51.6 degrees away from the equator. • The beta angle is the angle between the sun vector and the ISS orbit plane. • The beta angle of the ISS is 75 degrees
Options • There are four current options to dock a satellite to the ISS • There are two docking stations that are currently connected to the ISS. One being Russian made the SO-1 also named Pirs Docking Station. The dimensions for this piece are 4.9 m long, 2.25 m diameter, 3,676 kg, and 13 m^3. In the near future this compartment will be jettison for a larger SO-2 model. • The United States made airlock docking station is called the Quest Joint Airlock. One of its primary uses is for pressurizing and depressurizing a compartment for astronauts to prepare for a space walk. Its dimensions are followed 5.5 m long, 4 m diameter, 34 m^3. • The Canadarm 2 is also known as the Space Station Remote Manipulator System, SSRMS, and can fully extend up to 57.7 ft. It has seven motorized joints and can handle large payloads and assist in docking. • There are three Pressurized Mating Adapters which are used for docking with US and Russian modules as well as the Space Shuttle.
Conclusion • Build a spacecraft that is able to maneuver itself within 50 ft of the ISS and allow the Canadarm 2 to assist with docking • Build a Highly maneuverable spacecraft that is able to dock with one of the ISS many docks.
