Production UV inkjet printers use a special ink that only cure when it's exposed to ultraviolet wavelengths. The ink is delivered to the media the same way it's delivered in any other high volume inkjet printer, and ejected from the nozzles the same way; but it won't dry until the media is run through an ultraviolet wavelength.
The ink itself has a lower viscosity (it's thinner) than water based or solvent inks. So what are the advantages of UV inkjet systems over water-based or solvent inkjet systems?. UV inkjet systems are generally faster than other systems. This is because the ink is cured onto the substrate instead of dried.
To speed up solvent or water based inkjet printers, the media must run through drying lamps, which heats the ink and dries it faster. The only other option is to slow the machine down, allowing the ink to dry. Also with water based and solvent inks, the drying speed will vary depending on the substrate.
Some things dry faster than others. This is not the case with UV ink. The inkjet machine can run at high speeds consistently, no matter what you're printing on. There are three things to consider when looking at the quality of an inkjet printer: darkness (opacity), image "fill", and image sharpness (acuity).
UV ink tends to stay concentrated and keep its form, whereas other inks either soak into the substrate or spread. This gives it a higher opacity, better image fill and better acuity.
Using UV ink is generally cheaper than cartridge based inks. The ink is carried to the printhead from the ink reservoir, so you won't need to replace the cartridge (which is where the nozzles are) every time you run out of ink.
UV inkjet systems also can bring the cost of a job down, because the machine can run at higher production speeds, reducing labor costs and making room for more work in a shorter time. UV ink will stick to more substrates than any other ink. Plastic, coated, aqueous, porous, etc.,. It doesn't matter.
Not only will the UV ink stick to it better, but as already mentioned, it will also do so at consistent speeds, so you won't have to adjust all your equipment for each job you run. UV ink has lower viscosity than water based and solvent inks.
It runs through the nozzles easier, and won't clog them the way other inks do. The ink won't even dry without the ultraviolet wavelength, so you won't have to spend countless hours unclogging the nozzles each morning to prepare for the day.
This will also cut down on maintenance costs, because the printheads won't need to be replaced or repaired as often. The difference UV ink can make on a job is something that has to be experienced before it can be fully appreciated.
If you haven't looked into using a UV inkjet printer, call your local dealers and see if they'll give you a demo. You'll be impressed with the quality, speed, and other advantages UV ink offers over water-based and solvent inks.
